NEWS...

Although our club is still fairly new and still small (less than 30 members), we have great ideas we plan to implement to help the youth on the East side of Charlotte. We feel they deserve activities and educational events to help keep them engaged and out of trouble.

Carolina Cardinals is able to give small monetary prizes (scholarships) for our local essay and oratorical contests. These events are held annually with the local club winners competing to move to the District competition to be eligible to win $2,500.00 in scholarship money. If the person wins the District competition, they then go to the World Oratorical Competition in St. Louis, MO to win up to $15,000 more. (See details in the Special section of the website).

The Club held its third Back to School program in 2019, giving out free shoes, socks, t-shirts, dental hygiene packets and backpacks with school supplies. Over 800 people passed through the doors. We gave away over 300 pairs of shoes. See slideshows in our photo gallery. Due to COVID we did not have the event for 2020 or 2021. We are hoping we can resume the event this year.

We have added a partnership with The Relatives and Da Village Pop Up Shop. The Club will be helping them with their projects as well as continue to work with the Ronald McDonald House.

Education is very important to us also. We partnered with Briarwood Academy for the past 3 years to help with their after-school tutoring program. You can see some of the things we did along with them in our photo gallery. We had just added Devonshire Elementary School before COVID and prior to COVID, we were working with students at Greater Bethel AME Church.

This year we hope to resume some of activities at the schools. It will depend on COVID and if the schools will allow volunteers to enter this year.

We purchased coats, gloves, activity books and toiletries along with backpacks of school supplies for seven (7) students from Devonshire Elementary School for the Christmas holidays. We hope to work with an assisted living facility this year to help senior citizens who are sometime neglected during the holidays.

The Lives We Impact

Within Optimist International we have clubs grouped into Districts. The person over the District is  known as the Governor. We are honored to have the new Governor for the North Carolina West District from our club. It is none other than Ms. Bobbi Hague. She will be Governor for two years (until September 2023.)

CONGRATULATIONS, BOBBI!!
